Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Kim and Stacey

Dear Kim,

“Having you as my mentor for a second year has meant so much knowing you are serious about seeing a better person within me. Last year our relationship was kind of restricted and this year we’ve been through the happy times and the bad times as well. With your help, I’ve become more open minded and I’ve made wiser decisions. I will never forget when we went bowling with my brother and kicked his rear end lol XD”

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Michael & Robin

"I would like to thank my mentor for talking to me about college and helping me with problems. I know my mentor cared because he always asked about my parents. He always told me to take care of myself. In Rhino I learned to trust people and keep control of my life".

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee- Scott & Jose

I would like to thank my mentor for being there for me and for being a friend that I can count on. He was always there when I need him. He gave me advice to have a better relationship with my mom and listened to how I felt about my mom. The one thing I learned in this program that will help me grow and make a better life is to be communicative to others, to be able to be understood when someone doesn’t know me, to be respectful, and how to work as a team.

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee- Linzi & Evelyn

"I would like my mentor to know that I am thankful for all the places she has taken me and for being someone I could talk to about anything. She used to e-mail me to see how I was doing and plan our next one on one. I learned to be open and to try new things in life. I think this is important because it helps me prepared for everything that comes in life".

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee- Becky & Nayeli

I want to thank my mentor for all the attention she gave me. I thank her for the support and for listening to me during difficult situations. I know she cares for me because she listens to me and she gives me advise. I know she cared for me when we went skateboarding together for the first time. I have learned that I can open up to people without being judged. I have also learned someone cares about my life and I don’t necessarily need to hide or put a shield in front of me.

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Aaron & Dennis

"I would like to thank Aaron for being here for me, having fun with me, and laughing. I would also like to thank him for helping me out with my interest in music, thanks Aaron. The one thing he did that let me know he cared was when he actually took me into his house and introduced me to his wife. Another event was when he came to see me perform in the play "Electricidad" in which I was a part of. In this program I learned that the world doesn’t accept shyness. That will always stay with me and I thank the Lord I’m not a shy a person".

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Liz & Angelina

"I thank my mentor for giving me the opportunity to meet someone like her and always making my days remarkable. I also thank Liz for being a really nice person and always being supportive. Thanks Liz for all those great times we had. I knew my mentor cared when she took me to her office and she showed me the things that she was into. She even gave me a grammy CD of 2008 even before it was released. I also remember when she took me horse back riding and telling me to be careful and teaching me how to ride a horse. Something that I learned and experienced in this program that made me grow was when we had to cover our eyes and let our mentors guide us. That showed me that I can trust someone and shouldn’t be scared. I also learned that if you have team work you can achieve something greater than if you work alone".

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Charles & Josh

"I would like to thank my mentor for taking me out to meseums which are the places I like. I also want to thank him for hanging out and having fun with me. My mentor lets me know he cares for me because he spends his hour break with me. Through this program I learned to communicate with others. For example, you never know when the person next to you in class, school, or even your neighbor can end up being your friend and share things with each other".

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Lauren & Gaby

"Lauren has shown me I can open up to someone and to be open to new things. I got to trust Lauren and tell her things I would not tell other people. I can say she has become a friend to me. She took time off her life and spend time with me on some weekends. In this program I've learned I am capable of doing anything I set my mind to".

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Amy & Ana

"I would like to thank my mentor Amy for being there for me, for opening up to me and realizing how our lives are similar. For letting me know I could tell her anything and that I could even count on her. One thing that my mentor did that showed me she cared for me was when she would ask me how was I doing. She would call me or send me a message when she would not be able to make it to the session. One thing that I learned or experienced in this program was not to be shy. There is no reason for that. We have to speak what we feel".

Tuesday with Mentor and Mentee - Kim & Evilet

" I would like to thank Kim for being supportive and taking the time to listen to me when I had something to say, also for taking the time in writing me e-mails, and checking up on me. When I had something personal to talk about, you were there to listen and give me positive advice. During the time that we had to create a poem I learned that I have my own voice and that I can’t let anybody else speak for me. Now I will speak for myself and I won’t let nobody tell me I can’t do it because I know I can".

Untitled
Angelina Esteban (mentee)

I am realistic and joyful like a child in a ferris wheel
I hear a lot of voices telling me “yes”, “no”, and “ok” like a quite drum beet
I see a life being carried by the wind and I wonder were its landing would be

I wonder how the years will change my life
I want to become like a trophy, shining to the world of my success
I pretend to hide from my obstacles even though I will have to confront them one day
I feel like a flower being warm by the sun
I cry when I see a calm sea but can see the whirlpool underneath
I am a child that can be saved with the sight of a smile

I understand that life is like a steep mountain to be climbed, but I am willing to learn how to fall and get up proud and strong.
I always try to infect others with my happiness of a new day.
I see storming cloud poring pure water on me, opening a path of success within me.

I hope that my journey will have an awaiting life; the life that awaits me will end up with a happy and remarkable ending.

I am realistic and joyful like a child in a ferries wheel.

My Very Own Aztec Warrior
Evilet Diaz (mentee)

In the past you were a sister I didn’t know
Connected by blood, kept apart by age
Your style was foreign to me
Mean chola status, like your sharp lip liner, big argollas de oro,
War paint for your every day war pain

Now you are not just my sister,
You’re the person I turned to in all things
The mother to my heart
I watched as you became a
hardworker,
independent,
strong,
educated,
woman.
You’re the nani to my lilo

¿Love me oh love me?
Josue Rios (Mentee)

Mama,

I know how it feels when you say I love you and have no respond.
I know how it feels when you say are you hungry and no have respond.
I know how your emotions get when you work so hard, have everything for me, and get nothing back.

But Mama, love me oh love me.

I’m sorry for the extra heavy time I gave you, more than what you had.
I’m sorry for letting the plate fall in the kitchen and never picked up the fork.

but Mama, love me oh love me.

Grandpa, My Old Abuelito
Jose Gonzalez (mentee)

I saw with pain, with fear, with sadness
You were the person that I wished I had more time with.
I watched you smile through a 4 inch window, happy to see me after a couple of years
I saw you place your hand on the glass so that it lined up with mine
And as I saw your hand rise up, I saw your hand like branches on a tree holding family together.
But after you left, the family separated into different directions, and so everyone scattered like splinters on a broken log.

I love you Grandpa, my old Abuelito
I imagine you working on construction and looking down to see the family
I see you sitting down on a chair telling stories of your childhood.
I imagine you screaming my name in the crowd and giving me a thumbs up.
Now I see you fly free, while I wave goodbye.
I love you grandpa, my old Abuelito.
