Adams I Round Robin Poetry, 04.16.2009

Please don’t turn your back on me.
I will listen to you
Just like you would listen to me.
Be there when I need you.
I’ll be there for you.
We care for each other and we fight sometimes and it’s ok!
You will keep having problems and so will I, but staying together makes it worthwhile.
And our relationship would last for ever!!!
If we keep our love and openness alive.

In my neighborhood
I was sitting by the sidewalk.
A car drove by 2 times around the block
And I wasn’t quite sure what to think.
But ran quick.
I heard loud bangs
So I felt afraid.
I went inside with a horrible fright
And stayed inside the entire night.
I went outside the next night, the same thing happened that night.
I’m not sure what to do. Stay quiet or tell someone I trust.

In my neighborhood,
I have a lot of gangster writing in the walls of my apartment.
Some days are peaceful; and others are violent.
I wait for the day it will all go away, for peace to come and the sun to shine.
One day soon that day will come.
And no more violence will come
Around and I won’t have to hide.
I’ll feel happy and free to be me.
I had to take away the negative in me.
Someday soon please set me free.
I hope the gangsters will be.

Please don’t turn your back on me!
Alcohol is taking my Dad please God,
Don’t turn your back on me
I have the same problem to with my dad; I want it to go away!
I need your help,
Please don’t turn your back on me.
Day by day I lose you more. Why does the alcohol get more of you then I ever will?
Please don’t turn your back on me.
There will be no trust over you and me.
I won’t have anyone to talk to.
Let your love take power over it.
Help me; I don’t want my back turned on me.
God Please god
Don’t let Alcohol take me.

In my neighborhood
I hear shots
Reality, Free me from this world.
Please help me, I won’t give up.
I want to live in a safe place…
Where children play and parents smile.
Where I can play for a little while.
With loved ones within a mile.
Those bad people-please help me not to rile.
So keep me safe
And help me from being shot some day.
It’s just like tag but lives at stake.

Untitled
Angelina Esteban (mentee)

I am realistic and joyful like a child in a ferris wheel
I hear a lot of voices telling me “yes”, “no”, and “ok” like a quite drum beet
I see a life being carried by the wind and I wonder were its landing would be

I wonder how the years will change my life
I want to become like a trophy, shining to the world of my success
I pretend to hide from my obstacles even though I will have to confront them one day
I feel like a flower being warm by the sun
I cry when I see a calm sea but can see the whirlpool underneath
I am a child that can be saved with the sight of a smile

I understand that life is like a steep mountain to be climbed, but I am willing to learn how to fall and get up proud and strong.
I always try to infect others with my happiness of a new day.
I see storming cloud poring pure water on me, opening a path of success within me.

I hope that my journey will have an awaiting life; the life that awaits me will end up with a happy and remarkable ending.

I am realistic and joyful like a child in a ferries wheel.

My Very Own Aztec Warrior
Evilet Diaz (mentee)

In the past you were a sister I didn’t know
Connected by blood, kept apart by age
Your style was foreign to me
Mean chola status, like your sharp lip liner, big argollas de oro,
War paint for your every day war pain

Now you are not just my sister,
You’re the person I turned to in all things
The mother to my heart
I watched as you became a
hardworker,
independent,
strong,
educated,
woman.
You’re the nani to my lilo
Okana

¿Love me oh love me?
Josue Rios (Mentee)

Mama,

I know how it feels when you say I love you and have no respond.
I know how it feels when you say are you hungry and no have respond.
I know how your emotions get when you work so hard, have everything for me, and get nothing back.

But Mama, love me oh love me.

I’m sorry for the extra heavy time I gave you, more than what you had.
I’m sorry for letting the plate fall in the kitchen and never picked up the fork.

but Mama, love me oh love me.

Grandpa, My Old Abuelito
Jose Gonzalez (mentee)

I saw with pain, with fear, with sadness
You were the person that I wished I had more time with.
I watched you smile through a 4 inch window, happy to see me after a couple of years
I saw you place your hand on the glass so that it lined up with mine
And as I saw your hand rise up, I saw your hand like branches on a tree holding family together.
But after you left, the family separated into different directions, and so everyone scattered like splinters on a broken log.

I love you Grandpa, my old Abuelito
I imagine you working on construction and looking down to see the family
I see you sitting down on a chair telling stories of your childhood.
I imagine you screaming my name in the crowd and giving me a thumbs up.
Now I see you fly free, while I wave goodbye.
I love you grandpa, my old Abuelito.

Maria
Dennis (Rafiki) Rivas (Mentee)

Maria,
All the recollection of my childhood memories remind me of all the worries we engaged, I, only the neglection of my father became an injection to you as I grew.
I poisoned your big kind heart, worse I hit it with a dart causing a leak making you weak while I stepped a new life… into the street.
Every crime to you was a whine, an 'oh my', an, ‘Oh why?!’
Your love only became bigger.
The hate I had to my father only incremented while I implemented all my negativity towards you.
My mother became the pipe and my father that man on the corner who always tried keeping me sober but how ironic he was the connect.

Maria,
I felt your pain and heard you shed those tears and my fears kicked in.
I found a resemblance to my father.
My body broke down, my soul broke down, my tears broke out.
My tears were what Maria and I needed.
My tears brought us closer.
Now we truly are mother and son, Maria and I.
